Hairspray is the story of a cheerful school girl named Tracy Turnblad, a wannabe dancer who hopes to gain a place on a local telly programme called the Corny Collins Show. The programme is in fact based on a Baltimore-based telly series referred to as the Buddy Dean Show in Baltimore, Maryland.

Tracy is unfamiliar in the performing arts industry when she has an interview, even so she is selected for one of the performing spots & against considerably long odds she becomes a dancing superstar more or less overnight. Tracy is pleased with this newfound status, & she makes a decision to use her recognition to make positive changes to the show. The key motivation behind these positive changes is related to race. Tracy aims to racially combine the program, & as any person could imagine, Tracy is confronted with substantial hostility.

Hairspray transferred to London’s West End in two thousand & seven, opening for press at the Shaftesbury Theatre on October 11, before being opened to the public at its proper opening on October thirtieth, two thousand and seven. The musical show has had some illustrious actors — Michael Ball takes one of the lead roles as Edna Turnblad, Tracy’s very own mother, giving a compelling performance in this hard female character, whilst Mel Smith played joke shop manager Wilbur Turnblad, Tracy’s father. The original cast in the London West End also consists of newcomer to the theatre scene, Leanne Jones, in the main character of Tracy.

Hairspray the musical has received several encouraging mentions from newspapers & musical theatre fans alike. Jacqueline stated: “I have been to the play 4 times so far & I will be going back again at some point next week & a few more times after that as well. I love the moment and wish they could stay on longer. Ben Ellis is fantastic as link & Leanne Jones as Tracey and Michael Ball, well they are all spectacular. The theatre production of hairspray is unquestionably my favourite, mainly because its bubbly and if you’re feeling a tad bit low then it is guaranteed to make you feel a whole lot happier. I give it a 10 out of ten - I love it congratulations to everyone concerned.
